Tootles the Taxi by Joyce Blaikie Clegg

Ruth Kelsey’s choice number 1

Tootles the Taxi and other rhymes – Joyce Blaikie Clegg (author), John Kenney (illustrator), Ladybird Books

This is the poetry that started it all, at the tender age of four! Learning to read came easily thanks to my mother, and I was devouring Ladybird books long before I started school. Tootles was a particular favourite. I simply loved the sounds and rhythm of the words as much as the illustrations of the anthropomorphised vehicles set in a 1950s idyll. The gift of this simple book planted the seed that’s grown and blossomed into a life-long love of poetry.
